Big Success in Myrtle Beach SC.

On April 3, the members of the Lancaster High School Band and chaperones boarded tour buses and headed south to Myrtle Beach, S.C., to participate in The FIESTA-VAL Invitational Music Festival 2014, reported band director Robert Spiers. While in Myrtle Beach the band students visited Broadway at the Beach, Hard Rock Café, The Palace Theatre’s Illusions of Magic Show, as well as spent time on the beach.

Music festival competitions began April 4 at Myrtle Beach High School. The LHS Jazz Band and LHS Concert Bands performed at a high level receiving glowing comments from the panel of adjudicators, said Spiers. On April 6, the Red Devil Marching Band took to Ocean Boulevard for the parade competition, also receiving glowing comments from the five adjudicators along the parade route.

The FIESTA-VAL Awards ceremony was held Saturday afternoon where all participating schools gathered to see how they did in the competitions, said Spiers. Schools from six states participated in the FIESTA-VAL competitions.

After the awards ceremony, the LHS Band took home 12 trophies and recognitions for extraordinary performances, including second, jazz band; first, concert band; first, marching band; best drum majors; best flag team; best drum line; and best jazz band rhythm section.

When it came time to award the Grand Champion Band Award, for the highest collection of scores in the entire festival, band members were on the edge of their seats. to hear the announcer exclaim “And the winner of the FIESTA-VAL Grand Champion Award is….Lancaster High School!”

“When our name was called as the Grand Champion, I was so happy for the kids. These kids worked extremely hard during the past few weeks to get to this level,” said Spiers. “I told them afterwards that hard work and doing things the right way, results in recognition at the highest level.”

“This is perhaps the most successful competition that the LHS Band has ever had,” added band director Kenny Flester,
